One Symbol. Crores of Jobs. A Stronger India

- By Savitha Rao

In a country of over a billion people, speaking hundreds of languages, how can we ensure that every Indian-regardless of literacy or region-can recognize and choose products that are truly Made in India?

The answer is simple, yet powerful: One Nation One Symbol for Made in India

The Missing Link

India took a landmark step in 2020 by mandating the disclosure of country of origin on e-commerce platforms. I appreciate the Government of India for accepting my proposal for this and translating it into regulation within months. This move has empowered crores of Indian online buyers with greater transparency and marked an important milestone in consumer rights.

However, even today, there is no single, government-recognized visual symbol for “Made in India” products. Text-based disclosures – though critical – can be missed, misread, or manipulated. What we need now is the next logical step: a distinct, easily identifiable mark that transcends language and literacy, and instantly signals to every Indian that a product is proudly made in Bharat.

  • Many buyers want to support Indian products but struggle to identify them at a glance.
  • Packaging often hides the country of origin in fine print, or uses branding that mimics foreign products.
  • Millions of citizens-especially the elderly, rural, or less literate-are left out of the choice entirely.

A distinct, visual mark changes that. It speaks across languages. It requires no words. It enables every Indian to make a conscious, patriotic choice-every single day.

The Symbol Must Stand for Confidence

For One Nation One Symbol to truly inspire confidence, it must stand for something real. That’s why alongside the visual symbol, we need clear, trustworthy standards – not bureaucratic hurdles, but a simple framework that ensures integrity.

We’re not asking for a complex certification system that delays progress.

Instead, we propose:

  • Voluntary use in the initial phase
  • Simple and transparent eligibility criteria for what qualifies as Indian-made.
  • Ease of self-declaration with random audits or digital verification, similar to ISO or FSSAI standards.
  • Strict penalties for misuse.

This approach ensures the system is easy to adopt, yet impossible to exploit. A symbol built on trust and enforceability becomes a nationwide movement.

This approach keeps the process light and fast-while ensuring the symbol retains its meaning. A symbol backed by trust becomes a movement.

The Ripple Effect of One Nation One Symbol for Made in India

A symbol for Made in India products is not just a branding exercise  – it’s an economic and cultural catalyst.

For consumers:  Easier, faster choices rooted in patriotism

For Indian businesses: Visibility, credibility, and competitive edge

For e-commerce platforms: A visual tag to filter and promote Indian-made products

For global market : A unified, recognizable mark that strengthens India’s export identity

It also complements existing government missions like Vocal for Local , and Atmanirbhar Bharat- bringing them together under one clear, citizen-facing symbol.

A Call to Action

We urge the Government of India – particularly the DPIIT and Ministry of Commerce-to take the next bold step:

  • Officially notify a unified One Nation One Symbol for Made in India products.
  • Launch voluntary adoption with clear, simple guidelines. Criteria for use, penalties for misuse.
  • Back it with mass awareness campaigns across cities, villages, and digital platforms.

Let us make it easier for every Indian to support the Indian economy  – not once a year, but with every purchase.

Be Indian. Buy Indian.

Jai Hind.
